The Rear Naked Choke
The Rear Naked Choke (often abbreviated RNC, a.k.a. Mata Leao) is a chokehold applied from an opponent’s back. The following is a description of this technique using the right arm — the attacker’s right arm encircles the opponent’s neck, with the opponent’s trachea at the crook of the elbow. The attacker’s right hand then grasps/cuffs his own left bicep while his left forearm is placed behind the opponent’s head across the neck. The elbows are then brought together such that lateral pressure is applied to the neck on both sides. To complete the choke the attack needs to pull his shoulders back and expand his chest against the opponent’s upper back while straightening out his left arm. The RNC is considered to be a “blood choke” because it restricts blood flow to the brain via the carotid arteries.
